School Visits:

I'll admit, when I first found out that school visits were something authors should do  I was mildly terrified and had no idea what to expect. But they have quickly become one of my favorite parts of my job!

There is nothing more exciting than getting to interact with kid/teen readers and talk to them about books and writing and whatever else they have on their minds--and I do my best to visit as many schools and libraries as I possibly can.

I know some authors have all kinds of detailed information on their websites about their pricing for a school visit. But I also know how tight budgets can be these days, and I've personally found that each school has different wants and needs. So I think it's better to talk specifics instead of just setting out blanket prices for everyone. If you're interested in having me visit your school or library, shoot me an email at SWMessenger (at) hotmail (dot) com (make sure you put "School Visit" in the subject line) and we'll see what we can work out. I live in Southern California, so if you're local to the area there won't be any travel expenses.

As far as my presentation, that's another thing I keep somewhat fluid, depending on the needs of the school.  I write both middle grade and YA, so I like to customize my presentation for the age group I'm speaking to. My most popular presentation centers on the twenty (yes, TWENTY) draft process I went through getting KEEPER OF THE LOST CITIES published--complete with visual aids (see photos for a glimpse of my revision letters), but I have others on creating idea journals and world building. I try to keep my presentations light and funny, but always focus on the importance of finding inspiration everywhere, accepting feedback, learning from mistakes, never giving up, and reading reading reading. And I like to leave lots of time for Q&A, so that I get to talk to students about what they're interested in.

I also love to team up with local booksellers when I do school visits (which can sometimes help offset the cost of an Honorarium) and am happy to do a signing before or after the presentation. So if you have a favorite store you work with, definitely let me know.

And yes, I do Skype!

Skype visits are an awesome alternative for schools with budget restraints, and I am happy to offer free 15 minute Skype sessions for teachers and librarians.* (longer sessions are available for a fee) If that's something you would be interested in for your students, drop me an email at SWMessenger (at) hotmail (dot) com (make sure you put "Skype Visit" in the subject line).

I also have to add a HUGE thank you to every teacher or librarian reading this page (and even the ones who aren't--though they won't know that I'm saying it). Another thing I've learned from doing school visits is just how challenging your jobs can be, and you all deserve a big round of applause for the amazing things you do to support reading and literacy. *applauds* I am so incredibly grateful for all the love and support you show for me and my books and I hope to someday meet each and every one of you so I can thank you all personally. In the meantime: ((GROUP HUG))

*Sadly, for many different reasons, I can't offer free Skype sessions to homeschooling situations.

Will have to read Exile again before Sep. 2. You really have a winner with this trilogy and I wouldn't be surprised if a producer doesn't buy it for film.

    1. Well, it looks like I missed the deadline, and I'm not sure where Walker Elementary is. That's the tricky thing, I can't teleport, so I can't necessarily get everywhere. But I can SKYPE anywhere, so even if you're in 6th grade now, you could ask your teacher or librarian to contact me about setting up a Skype chat. :)

  13. I am 12 years old and I am a big reader. I read all the time so I have read a ton of books. But, the Keepers books were two of the best books I have ever read and I cant wait for Everblaze to come out. I loved your books so much that I even gave Let the Sky Fall a chance (I usually don't like books like that), and it was AMAZING and I cant wait to read Let the storm break. I have always loved writing and your books were truly inspiring and I would love to get some tips from a fantastic writer such as yourself.

  17. I am 12 years old and I have read all 4 of your books multiple times, but mainly your keeper books. I LOVE them. I have sent you an email, though you haven't responded, and I can't wait until your next book comes out. I will be first in line for it on November 4th. Unfortunately my parents won't drive the 6 hours to LA for the book release. I was hoping you could visit my school but I doubt my librarian would go for it. Thanks!

  18. I'm 11 and I LOVE the keepers series!!!! My school librarians already have a book person coming this year but i'm going to recommend you for next year!!!! Can't wait for everblaze!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. I'm now 13 and I think your books are in a very different class than other books, which are based on legends, myths, and old folklore. Alongside with Harry Potter, I think your books are so creative and adventurous (also nail-biting) that I love them so much. Its been a long time in my 13 years of life that I have met someone able to write books on the same level as J.K Roweling. Thank you so much for existing. (Not kidding at all.)

  20. What would have to happen for you to visit my library? I live in northern OR, so not THAT far away...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, unfortunately, I can't teleport, and Oregon is definitely too far away to drive in one day. So while I can still arrange a school visit, I would have to charge a travel fee. Lots of schools do fundraisers to cover the cost, and if that's something your school would like to do please have your teacher or librarian contact me. There's also Skype, which is free for 20 minutes. Also something you could have your teacher or librarian contact me about. The email address is above. :)

  21. I just read the first book two days ago and now I am in the third book. Thank you so much for writing Keepers of the Lost Series. In my opinion these kind of books are really rare to find. It's like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. I also love to write and want to be an author some day. I love the setting and the plot. And as an want to be author, your writing has become a big inspiration to me. Thank you again for writing the books. I can't wait to read more!!!!

    1. Alas, I really don't know. Hopefully someday soon, but so far the only events I know about are the ones on my events page. And whenever I confirm a new event it gets added there. So the best advice I can give is to check that page from time to time. Hopefully something that involves a return to France will show up on there someday. :)

  44. I really love your work and the story line of the Keeper of the Lost Cities series. Your books have given me some ideas for the stories I'm in my Creative Writing class. When I read your books I can visually see what's going on in the story in my head. Sometimes I get so entranced with the book, that it takes me a little while to come back to reality. One of my favorite characters is Dex. He sounds really cute, but I feel bad that Sophie has like no idea that he's crushing on her, even though it's soon obvious he likes her. This came from a very BIG FAN of yours that is 12 yrs. old. And can I just say YOU ARE AN Amazing author!!!

I read your books and am currently writhing in agony on the floor due to having to wait for book four: Neverseen. ARGHHH! I wish I could teleport to San Diego to see you and also get book Four. I wanted to have you for a school visit but I live in NORTHERN WISCONSIN which is like as far away from you as possible. :( crying hard
School visit...my dream!!!! BTW, me and Sophie have a lot in common...hair color, phyisique, name. It's sooo awesome!!!!!!!
Also... I can hardly sleep without a beat up teddy bear named Sally. I once shared such a long summary of the first book with my friend that she said,"I don't need to read it! I already know the whole plot!" Oops...
Anyway, love you and your books. KEEP BEING AWESOME!

P.S. I'm 14 and still love your books! I think they're great for any age! (Though the later books started get more intense, something I personally liked a lot)

  50. I hope the librarians, teachers and fans let you know that your Keeper of the Lost Cities series transcends age groups. The dynamics between the adults and the adolescents keep the interest of both the young and the old.

My daughter and I love your books. I've shared the books with my friends (yes, adults +50) - we are always looking for fun interesting books. Years ago we got hooked on young adult novels when Harry Potter came out. We have continued to read Eragon series, the Unwanteds, Fablehaven, the Heroes of Olympus, the Beyonders. My daughter, age 11 and I can't get enough of these great books.

I have to say though, your Keepers of the Lost Cities has be captivated. I just love your characters. I hope you do not end with the 5 books. You have opened the door to adding sequels to this series. You could continue to follow through with all the unrest and create additional books or you can go out a number of years when the kids have aged a little more. Either way, I would be thrilled to read more.

Thank you for a happy reader, a happy Mom and a happy fan.
