Marvelous Middle Grade Monday: The Cavendish Home For Boys and Girls, by Claire LeGrand--plus a giveaway!

Ugh I am soooooooooo jetlagged from my whirlwind trip to Florida (which was SO MUCH FUN, btw and I will tell you about when my brain is working again!) So once again Deb Marshall is covering my MMGM. (THANK YOU DEB!!!) And she's chosen to feature a book that I am DYING to read: THE CAVENDISH HOME FOR BOYS AND GIRLS, by Claire LeGrand

Here's how the publisher describes it:

At the Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls, you will definitely learn your lesson. A dark, timeless, and heartfelt novel for fans of Coraline and The Mysterious Benedict Society.

Victoria hates nonsense. There is no need for it when your life is perfect. The only smudge on her pristine life is her best friend Lawrence. He is a disaster—lazy and dreamy, shirt always untucked, obsessed with his silly piano. Victoria often wonders why she ever bothered being his friend. (Lawrence does too.)

But then Lawrence goes missing. And he’s not the only one. Victoria soon discovers that The Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls is not what it appears to be. Kids go in but come out…different. Or they don’t’ come out at all.

If anyone can sort this out, it’s Victoria—even if it means getting a little messy.
And like always, here's Deb explain for herself why all of us need to read this one. Take it away Deb!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There’s a cold wind blowing for children who need some fixing. It’s time to stop them going about life, being all messy and disruptive. One would think that Victoria would be all for something like this. She is, after all, the queen of perfection. She loves it. She detests messes and disorder. And she certainly looks down her nose at those who are cast in that vein. Fix up the messes! Down with disorder!
But, when those kids, including her one and only friend, start going missing--she notices. She cares. And that is what I loved most about this book. Although Victoria has all the ingredients of what could be a hugely unlikeable character, the author does a marvelous job of letting you see between the lines and into Victoria’s heart. In other words, I couldn’t help but like her. She adores her friend, Lawrence, whether she shows it or not. It is only what she perceives to be his imperfections sometimes getting the better of her, causing her to say and do things to Lawrence that aren’t best friend actions. But, thanks to the author, you understand Victoria and you give her the benefit of the doubt. She’s a wonderfully complicated character with some seriously big (okay, huge!) flaws and yet you kinda like her even when she’s being her perfectionist, I am the best, I can’t stand mess kid self.
Next to characterization, the atmosphere and tension created is stellar! Both are heightened with the imagery and descriptions filled with swatches of red, mud brown and dark weaving in and out of the pages. And some of the glimpses of evil Victoria begins to feel and notice, especially in the adults, are down right creepy.
A sinister feel of something wicked this way coming for less than perfect children that begins in the opening chapters, unique characters and friendships and the way the author has with words made this a book I couldn’t put down!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Yup, I DEFINITELY need to read this one. It is officially next on my list. Thanks so much for the feature, Deb!

In the meantime, I want one of you to have the chance to read it, so I'm giving away a copy to one lucky winner. To enter, make sure you leave a comment on this post by 11:59 pm PST on Saturday September 15th. I'll draw one random winner and post their name on Sunday, September 16th. If you would like to join in the MMGM fun, all you have to do is blog about a middle grade book you love (contests, author interviews and whatnot also count--but are most definitely not required) and email me the title of the book you're featuring and a link to your blog at SWMessenger (at) hotmail (dot) com. (Make sure you put MMGM or Marvelous Middle Grade Monday in the subject line so I see it)

NOTE: I used to not have a cut-off time for adding links to the post, but with how insane my schedule is right now, if you don't email me by Sunday evening (usually around 11pm PST is when I put the links together) I can't guarantee I'll have a chance to add you. BUT, you are welcome to add your link in the comments on this post so people can find you!

*Please note: these posts are not a reflection of my own opinions on the books featured. Each blogger is responsible for their own MMGM content and I do not pre-screen posts ahead of time, nor do I control what books they choose. I simply assemble the list based on the links that are emailed to me ahead of time

    I don't usually go for books that are still being hyped everywhere, but I made the "mistake" of reading some posts about this one and now I'm hooked. =P

    And a note to clarify: I do not have a giveaway of Tracing Stars. So sorry for the confusion. (I must have worded my email to you, Shannon, in a strange way--because I did win this book in a giveaway but am keeping my gorgeous and signed hardcover to read aloud with my daughter).
