Treat Yourself

If you're friends with me on Facebook, you've probably seen me post pictures like this:

Which means you're probably well aware of my *slight* cupcake addiction, and my tendency to treat myself with some when I'm having a bad day.

What you might not know is, a few years ago, that's SOOOOO not something I would've done.

I would've told myself they're too unhealthy, too many calories, too expensive, too insert-other-excuse-here.

But you know what I realized?

Sometimes, you just need a cupcake. So I decided to start treating myself.

Which I actually think is a pretty good writing philosophy--if you really think about it. Sure, we can all make sacrifices and push ourselves to pump out those words, finish that draft, power through that revision--and that's good. We need to do that sometimes.

But sometimes, we have to treat ourselves. Work on something new. Sink into a good book instead of writing. Or--gasp--get out of the house and see the outside world! (rumor has it there's sunlight and stuff. Who knew?) Whatever it takes to keep the process fun and revive us through the hard days.

So I'm treating myself this weekend with a day off for Disneyland. It's loooooooooooong overdue. And I hope some of you get to treat yourselves too.

Even if you can't take a day away--there's ALWAYS cupcakes! ;)

  1. You also have the world's best puppy dog eyes expression. I'm sure your parents were helpless when you threw down on them.

  2. Shannon, just this past week I decided to treat myself to two things -- some expensive cheese and a new bag that caught my eye (I practically had to wrestle it out of another shopper's hands). I'm always buying things for the kids, but hardly ever for myself. So, they were my back-to-school treats. Yay for spoiling ourselves!

  3. There's been no sunshine all week. Only rain and gloom. Makes me want to hide under my bedcovers all day and eat cupcakes!

Have a wonderful time in Disneyland, Shannon!!! Send some sunshine and warmth to PA if you can! :)

  5. I love cupcakes, almost as much as I like hot chocolate. And you're right, I totally had to take some me time this week, otherwise I couldn't get myself to write.

  6. I'm going to make that my motto for life. "Sometimes, you just need a cupcake."

  7. Have fun! I made Peppermint Patty Cupcakes the other day. Cupcakes with Peppermint Patties inside of them...yum...drool...I think that's my treat for the year. The calories should last me that long!

  8. This is so true! Sometimes you just have to step away and do something new...or eat a cupcake. Those cupcakes look really good, by the way.

  12. I too your advice and hooked up with my dealer this morning to score some chocolate almonds.

(My dealer is a 7th grader raising money for Band)

It's a win-win situation for both of us.

  18. Great post! And so true - it's important to reward our hard work once in a while.

I bought myself a dress the other day - which I NEVER do! I hate shopping for one thing, and impulse clothing purchases are just not me at all. But I was out anyway looking for school socks for my son, and it was cute, and it fit(!), and it wasn't too expensive, so there you go.

Other than that, my treat is a specialty coffee at Starbucks. YUM.

  19. I love this post! I just treated myself to a novel, tonight. Have you read Keturah and Lord Death, by Martine Leavitt? I hadn't read it before because the cover wasn't my thing, but it was sooo good. SO GOOD.

    Have a great weekend! :o)
