Marvelous Middle Grade Monday--NERDS (and a 2-book Giveaway!!!)

Back with another MMGM, and I thought I'd get back in the swing with a bang by featuring one of my favorite new series: NERDS by Michael Buckley.

You might recognize his name from all the gushing I've done over his Sister's Grimm series--which is beyond fabulous. He does it again with NERDS--though the two series couldn't be more different. Sister's Grimm is fairy tales and subtle romance and killer fantasy. NERDS is James Bond goes nerdy middle school. Which is pretty much a recipe for awesome.

The series currently has two books so far:

NERDS

And M IS FOR MAMA'S BOY

They're both hilarious--if you can't tell by the covers alone.

The basic concept: thanks to secret government technology, the nerdiest kids in school have been turned into spies. Their biggest weaknesses and eccentricities have been manipulated into virtual super powers. So a girl allergic to everything is now allergic to lies, and serves as a human lie detector, or a hyperactive kid can run up walls. How clever is that?

Add to that a seriously creative art design concept (the books speak to you at the different chapter breaks, like there's a security system you need clearance from) and hilarious illustrations and you have a series of books I KNOW kids will eat up. But adults will love them too. Buckley's super-exaggerated sense of humor will make you laugh out loud over and over again.

Basically, NERD is the new cool. So I guess it's a good thing I'm a large nerd. ;)

But don't take my word for it. I managed to get my hands on a SIGNED COPY OF BOTH BOOKS, and I'm giving them away to one lucky commenter on this post.

To enter, simply follow my blog and leave a comment before 11:59 pm pacific on Saturday, April 16th. I'll draw one random winner and announce their name on Sunday, April 17th. Good luck.

  20. These sound like books that will get reluctant kids to read. The covers make the books look quite fun to read. Reminds me somewhat of the Captain Underpants books my son read when he was younger.

  34. Oh, these sound like so much fun! I got into Sisters Grimm on your recommendation, and one of my favourite things about the series (though there are so many things) is Daphne's sense of humour... her impression of Hamstead hitching up his trousers kills me. Sounds like I'll love these!
